September is Recovery Month!

Parents and caregivers are important partners in a teen’s recovery from substance use, and it’s natural for this process to be challenging for everyone involved. Here are a few suggestions that may be helpful if your child is facing difficulties with substance use:

Be Actively Involved and Consider Professional Guidance: Staying involved in your teen’s recovery process and seeking help from professionals, such as their primary care doctor, school counselors or private therapists, can provide valuable guidance and strengthen your efforts to support them.

Keep Communication Open and Supportive: Try to create a safe space where your teen feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences. Focus on listening without judgment and avoid criticism or blame. Young people are often exposed to misleading messages from various sources, and they may not fully understand the risks.

Set Clear Boundaries with Compassion: Establishing clear and realistic boundaries around substance use can help guide your teen. At the same time, provide consistent support and reassurance, understanding that the journey to quitting and recovery can have ups and downs.

Encourage Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Support your teen in developing healthy habits that can aid their recovery, such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and engaging in positive activities that promote their well-being.

Every step forward, no matter how small, is a positive step in the right direction!
