DSC_0067We are excited to announce that this week during National Bike Month, Morrisville will be seeing its first bike lanes striped in the Village! This project, funded through Healthy Lamoille Valley, is part of an on-going effort of the Morristown Bike and Pedestrian Committee to create a safe, interconnected bicycle and pedestrian network in town. The Congress Street bike lane project is the first link to be completed in a route connecting Village residences to Oxbow Riverfront Park and to the new Lamoille Valley Rail Trail.

Bike lane striping is just one example of a low-cost infrastructure improvement with a high value return. An increasing number of studies are showing that bicycle and pedestrian facilities in a community spur economic development, lead to better health outcomes and environmental sustainability.  Mark Fenton mentioned these types of low-cost improvements during his recent visit (https://www.healthylamoillevalley.org/healthy-choices)

The on-going work being implemented by the committeeDSC_0068 aligns with the vision of the Morristown Town Plan and supports the goals of Vermont’s Complete Streets Policy. The Complete Streets approach to planning and designing our communities ensures that the needs of all users of the transportation system; including motorists, bicyclists, public transportation users, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities are considered when constructing new or rehabilitating existing roadways.
Do you have ideas on how to make Morristown more walk and bike friendly? Are you interested in getting involved? For more information about the Morristown Bike and Pedestrian Committee and for meeting times, please contact Todd Thomas at 888-6373 and/or [email protected]. Thanks!
