Congratulations to Kate Whitehead, Healthy Community Design Lead, on receiving the 2015 Jim Marvin Award for Excellence in Community Service at the Lamoille County Planning Commission’s Annual meeting.
“Kate Whitehead is the long-time Healthy Community Design project lead for Healthy Lamoille Valley, formerly the Fit and Healthy Council of Lamoille Valley. Over the past several years, Kate has helped communities implement projects that increase access to recreation, healthy food, and safer places to walk and bike. Healthy Community Design is all about making it easier for people to choose healthy activities by building them into the community’s physical environment and social fabric. Kate excels at finding a uniting vision for community members. Her presence instantly puts people at ease and her easy-going style persistently moves projects forward. Some of the Healthy Community Design projects implemented under Kate’s direction include: creating bike lanes in Morristown, the annual Healthy Lamoille Valley 5k Fun Run during Rocktoberfest, walk and bike surveys to improve or expand access, park revitalization, and supporting community gardening projects. Kate has helped with small, but impactful, projects in Morristown, Cambridge, Jeffersonville, Hyde Park, Eden, and Wolcott and has strengthened connections throughout Lamoille County communities and organizations. LCPC awarded Kate Whitehead its 2015 Marvin Award for Excellence in Community Service.”
Kate also served on a team that received accolades: Cambridge and Jeffersonville residents and committees banded together to develop a guide to area trails, resulting in the Cambridge Trails Network map. This brochure, which fits in your pocket, was a collaborative effort to showcase multi-use trails in Cambridge and Jeffersonville. It also lists several businesses and local agricultural resources. You can find the trails map at locations throughout Cambridge and Jeffersonville, and at the Smugglers’ Notch Area Chamber of Commerce Information Booth. Congratulations to the Cambridge Conservation Commission, Cambridge and Jeffersonville Planning Commissions, Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Cambridge Trail Coalition, Cambridge Artists and Entrepreneurs, Healthy Lamoille Valley, and more for making this project a reality! LCPC awarded the Cambridge Trails Network Map Team its 2015 Marvin Award for Excellence in Community Service.”
It is with sadness that we share the current funding for the Healthy Community Design Projects has been eliminated at the State level. We are currently looking for new funding streams to support this important work.
Thank you to Taylar Foster, at LCPC for sharing the press release!
